Nana Akwasi Agyemang, who is a former Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is reported dead at age 86.
Kasatintin.com has learnt that late Nana Akwesi Agyemang, who was also known as ‘Okumkↄm Nana Akwesi Agyemang’ passed on at 5.30am on Tuesday at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The late KMA boss was a member of the Oyoko Royal Family and was considered a leading contender for the vacant Asante Stool following the demise of the late Otumfuo Opoku Ware II in 1999.
Unfortunately, Late Akwesi Agyemang lost the race as kingmakers settled on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as the new Asantehene.
‘Okumkↄm’ Nana Akwesi Agyemang has a long political history, dating back to 1977. In total, he served as Mayor at the KMA for nearly 20 years under various governments including Ignatius Kutu Acheampong’s Supreme Military Council as well as Dr. Hilla Limann and Flt. Lt Jerry John Rawlings’ regime.
Late Akwesi Agyemang was also appointed Deputy Minister of Science and Environment under Rawlings’ regime.
Did ordinary people love him?
Okumkↄm was very ‘powerful’ during his days as the KMA Chief Executive.
It has become the ‘norm’ not to talk ill about the dead yet some market women simply cannot forget how the late KMA boss constantly frustrated them in their business.
70-Year-Old Maame Akosua Mensah revealed in an interview with Kasatintin.com that:
‘I remember those days we the market women had to sing and spread our clothes on the ground for him to walk on anytime he paid a visit to the market.
‘We had to ‘worship’ him so he will not demolish our stores and allow us to sell on the street.’
Maame Akosua Mensah stated that:
‘ I will miss him for his involvement in major clean up exercises. He wanted Kumasi to be clean and maintain its pride as the Garden City.’
A few days ago, it was widely circulated on social media that legendary Ghanaian musician Daddy Lumba (DL) has also passed on.
Kasatintin.com‘s checks however revealed that Daddy Lumba is still alive and kicking.
