Government has extended its free water supply package for all Ghanaians for another three months. This means that the general public will continue to enjoy the freebies till end of December 2020.
The extension of the free potable water takes effect October 1, 2020.
A statement by the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources dated September 23, 2020 stated that the decision is part of additional measures ‘to enable Ghanaians continue with the protocols especially the washing of hands under running water, to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic’.
In view of this, landlords and tanker service providers are advised to refrain from charging or selling water to consumers since the government is paying for the service.
The Ministry further appealed to Ghanaians to ‘use the water judiciously in the observance of the protocols’.
Opinions are divided about the real intentions of this government free water package.
A section of the public thinks it has strategically been introduced to win votes for the ruling NPP government in 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Others also content that the free water meets the real needs of the people.
