US President Donald Trump on Thursday conceded defeat shortly after the Congress officially certified that Joe Biden, 78 and Kamala Harris, 56 won the November 3, 2020 elections.
Although he disagrees with the outcome and the general conduct of the election, Trump said that there will be “an orderly transition” to Biden’s presidency on January 20.
Trump released a statement just after the US Congress pronounced its verdict saying;
“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition [swearing-in] on 20th January”.
“While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again,” he said, hinting at his return in the 2024 US election campaign.
Pro-Trump rioters violently stormed the Capitol Hill in Washington DC Wednesday night to disrupt the US Congress meeting.
Some members of Trump’s cabinet have resigned.
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos became the second cabinet member to quit following the Wednesday night violent protest.
In her resignation letter, Ms DeVos – who is one of the longest serving members of the president’s administration – accused Trump of fomenting Wednesday’s disorder.
“There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is the inflection point for me,” she wrote.
The same day, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao stepped down, explaining she had been “deeply troubled” by the rampage.
Other aides are set to quit — special envoy Mick Mulvaney, a senior national security official, and the chief of staff to First Lady Melania Trump.
Also, a state department adviser has been sacked after calling Mr Trump “unfit for office” in a tweet.
