Ramatu Bawumia has been described as the first wife of Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana.
For some reasons, Ramatu is not as popular as second lady Samira Bawumia.
Samira seems to have taken her shine in the political landscape while she (Ramatu) runs a business in WaleWale, a town in West Mamprusi of the North East Region of Ghana.
As a Muslim, Dr Bawumia is permitted to marry as many women as he likes provided he can take care of them and love them equally.
Samira Bawumia is most of the time recognised at official functions and political events as the wife of the Vice President.
The woman ‘Ramatu Bawumia’ became known recently.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin mistakenly mentioned Ramatu Bawumia as the wife of the Veep during the inauguration of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
He later corrected the ‘error’ and acknowledged Samira Bawumia as the wife of Dr Bawumia.
One Facebook user known as Stephen Kwabena Atta claimed that the name of Bawumia’s alleged first wife was intentionally submitted to the Speaker of Parliament just to expose some secrets which have been kept from Ghanaians.
During President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address (SONA 2021) in Parliament, the NDC Minority caucus demanded to see Ramatu Bawumia moment Right Hon Bagbin acknowledged dignitaries present and mentioned the name of Samira Bawumia.
In response to the minority bench, the Speaker said:
‘Honorable members, I don’t know which of you has a girlfriend called Ramatu but we don’t have any dignitary here called Ramatu’.
