Kasatintin.com has gathered credible information about the shortage of dog meat in some part of the Upper East Region particularly Sandema in the Builsa North Municipality.
Dog meat sellers at Sandema have expressed worry dogs have become scarce in major markets in the Municipality and for this reason, they are unable to serve their customers.
One seller said he roamed the whole dog meat market Friday morning and saw there was only one dog available for sale.
‘We were six dog meat sellers in the market at that time, all bargaining to buy the dog. I was able to buy it because I offered to pay GH¢185.00 for what I would have ordinarily bought for GH¢140.00’, he told the GNA.
The dog meat seller explained that he eagerly bought the dog at that high price because ‘it was a market day, and he could not afford to disappoint his customers, who usually trooped to his place to buy their favourite delicacy by midday’.
Interestingly, other animals such as sheep and goats abound on the market and selling as low as GH¢40.00 but their patronage is not encouraging.
Owing to the situation, the price of dog meat has increased astronomically.
Kasatintin.com’s investigations found that the thigh of the dog which used to sell for GH¢25.00 is now sold at GH¢30.00.
The neck of the dog, previously sold at GH¢18.00 is now going for GH¢25.00.
Dog meat trade is a booming business in Ghana as many people consider it a delicacy and as good source of aphrodisiac.
