Ramatu Bawumia, a woman who is reported to be a trader in WaleWale has made the headlines this week.
Ramatu is alleged to be the first wife of Vice President of Ghana Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Conversations on Dr Bawumia’s marriage heightened when the Speaker of Parliament mistakenly mentioned Ramatu’s name–instead of Samira Bawumia–during the inauguration of President Nana Akufo-Addo, and also at the delivery of the state of the nation address.
Until the recent development, most Ghanaians had lived with the notion that Samira Bawumia was the only wife of the Veep.
Samira has since 2016 been acknowledged as the second lady of Ghana. She accompanies the Vice President to both national and high profile ceremonies.
Grapevine information suggests that between Ramatu and Samira, Ramatu is the eldest wife.
Per his religion, Dr Bawumia can marry up four women provided he can cater for their needs and love them equally.
But is it really true that Bawumia has another wife which he is hiding from the public. How long have they been married?
Well, a statement from his office has denied knowledge of any woman called Ramatu stressing that Dr Mahumudu Bawumia has ‘never met or seen this purported Ramatu let alone take her as a wife.’
For the avoidance of doubt, it further stated that ‘Vice President has only one wife, his dear Samira Bawumia and they have been married for 17 years even though his religion permits him to marry up to four wives’.
