Many people are feared dead following a huge explosion near a mining town in the Western Region of Ghana on Thursday.
A vehicle carrying mining explosives collided with a motorcycle near the town of Bogoso resulting in the tragic incident.
Eyewitnesses claim that the motor bike attempted to overtake the mining truck and incidentally got trapped under it.
The truck driver who is said to have been moving from Tarkwa towards the Chirano mines unknowingly pulled the bike along and the sparks generated caused the explosion.
The disaster led to loss of lives and the destruction of the entire community within the reach of the explosion.
Rescue efforts are under way. People have been advised to move out of the area.
Police have also called on nearby towns to ‘open up their classrooms, churches etc to accommodate surviving victims’.
President Nana Akufo-Addo in a tweet said ‘It is a truly sad, unfortunate and tragic incident’.
‘The Police, Armed Forces and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are co-ordinating efforts to contain the situation, and I have also instructed NADMO to see to it that rapid relief is brought to residents of the town’.
He added that ‘Government will spare no effort to ensure a rapid return to a situation of normalcy for residents of Apiate’.
