A Kenyan man, Augustine Wanyonyi has been arrested for stealing two Bibles from a municipal supermarket worth Ksh1840.
Wanyonyi, 30 has been arraigned in court and charged with stealing the holy books.
He is alleged to have entered the supermarket at around 7:00 pm where he acted as a client before stealing the Bibles.
The accused is believed to have picked two Revised Standard Bibles valued at Ksh920 each at the Naivas Supermarket on Moi Avenue and hid them in his pants and passed the cashier table without paying.
But the CCTV captured him and was confronted by the supermarket security.
Wanyonyi prayed the court to tamper justice with mercy as he committed the offence due to emotional stress.
He confessed that he developed suicidal thoughts after fire destroyed his home in the Mukuru Njenga slum, thus he wanted to learn more about God and his words which led him to steal the Bibles.
‘I stole the Bible so that I could read, understand and preach the word of God instead of committing suicide due to problems I’m facing’, Wanyonyi explained.
According to him, he wanted to give one of the Bibles to his wife and use the other.
