President Nana Akufo-Addo has sacked Mr Yaw Kwakwa as the Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).
A letter signed by Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, Minister of Transport said;
‘His excellency the President of the Republic, per letter No. OPS127/22/104 dated 31st January,2022, has directed that the appointment of Mr Yaw Kwakwa as Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited be terminated.
‘In this regard, kindly take the necessary steps to give effect to the directive’.
It is unclear why Mr Kwakwa was fired but in the last few weeks, the Airport Company and newly established private jet company operated by McDan Aviation have been involved in a dramatic fight.
On January 1, the GACL ordered the newly launched McDan Aviation to suspend the use of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) until further notice.
Yaw Kwakwa, then Managing Director of the Airport Company, in a letter dated on January 31 notified McDan to suspend the inauguration of its Private Jet Terminal at KIA, referencing the earlier communication.
‘We note with concern your failure to comply with the directive despite the outstanding issues on the prior terms and conditions for the use and operations of Terminal 1 as a Private Jet Terminal’, he said.
Yaw Kwakwa’s Reaction
The embattled Ghana Airports Manager, on Wednesday stated that he is unware of the termination of his appointment.
Mr Yaw Kwakwa disclosed that he is yet to receive an official correspondence to that effect.
It has emerged that news about Mr. Kwakwa’s dismissal broke whilst he was leading Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee to inspect the McDan Aviation facility at the Kotoka International Airport.
‘I don’t know what you are talking about. My appointment has not been terminated so if you have any evidence… I don’t know about it,…. but when I get to that bridge I will cross it’, he reacted during an interview with the media.
