Many people have fled Ukraine following Russia invasion in the country.
Russia-Ukraine conflict has intensified in the last few days.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been spotted in a military uniform seeking to defend his country with his last blood.
But some Africans who have been caught in the crossfire have appealed to their respective governments to evacuate them immediately from the Eastern Europe nation.
Ukraine is home to many African students who are pursuing further studies in medicine.
Third-year medical student from Nigeria, Lolade Lawal tells Al Jazeera her life has been turned upside down in a way she never imagined since the conflict started in Ukraine last week.
‘It is scary, very scary. I’m very worried. People are running for their lives. We are hiding in groups so we can keep an eye on each other’, Lawal revealed over the phone as she sheltered with other students at a safe bunker in the northeastern city of Sumy.
The Executive Director of Africa Educational Watch (EduWatch), Kofi Asare has indicated that there could be close to 600 Ghanaian medical students in Ukraine.
According to him, Ghana ‘medical training system is designed to exclude than include…If our medical schools were expanded and resourced to train more, rather than restrict access, why would that number travel to Ukraine to learn medicine?…Oh Ghana!’.
Kofi Asare’s Facebook post read;
‘Anecdotally, there are about 600 Ghanaian medical students in Ukraine. This is because our medical training system is designed to exclude than include.
Infact, it is easier for Putin to enter heaven than for one to gain admission into a medical school in Ghana.
If our medical schools were expanded and resourced to train more, rather than restrict access, why would that number travel to Ukraine to learn medicine? Oh Ghana!’.
