Most people who find a spider in their bedroom often quickly try to get rid of it.
But it has become clear that, men who actually need longer hours of erection must keep a spider by their bedside.
Why? Scientists have found that a bite from the Brazilian wandering spider can cause an erection that lasts for several hours.
The wandering spider, also known as armed spider or banana spider, belongs to the genus Phoneutria, which means ‘murderess’ in Greek.
It is one of the most venomous spiders on earth.
A single bite from this Brazilian wandering spider has been shown to have side effects including a four-hour-long erection.
‘The erection is a side effect that everybody who gets stung by this spider will experience along with the pain and discomfort’, the study team member Romulo Leite of the Medical College of Georgia said ‘We’re hoping eventually this will end up in the development of real drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction‘.
The incredible research was presented at the poster session of American Physiological Society (APS) annual meeting.
The study observed that the Brazilian wandering spiders’ venom is a complex cocktail of toxins, proteins and peptides which affects ion channels and chemical receptors in victims’ neuromuscular systems.
It maintained that after a human is bitten by one of these spiders, he or she, in most cases, experiences initial symptoms such as severe burning pain at the site of the bite, sweating and goosebumps.
Within 30 minutes, the symptoms become systemic to include high or low blood pressure, fast or a slow heartbeat, nausea, abdominal cramping, hypothermia, vertigo, blurred vision, convulsions and excessive sweating associated with shock.
Adding to the intense pain and possible medical complications, the bite of a Brazilian wandering spider can deliver a long, painful erection to human males because the venom has been found to boost nitric oxide, a chemical that increases blood flow.
