Women in Spain could be granted a special leave by their employers to take care of their menstrual pain in the coming days.
The Spanish Cabinet have approved a draft law on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 that grants workers (women) the right to take paid sick leave due to severe menstrual pain.
An employee would be entitled to stay away from work for three days every month.
‘We are making a law that will ensure that women can live better’, Spanish Equality Minister Irene Montero told the press after the Cabinet meeting.
The draft bill has to be forwarded to Parliament for further deliberations and subsequent approval.
If the bill goes through,Spain would become the first European country to implement such a law to improve the welfare of women.
But Indonesia and South Korea are amongst the few countries which allow paid menstrual leave.
