Women in Chad can no longer turn down marriage proposals from men.
A higher Islamic Council in Mangalmé in North-eastern Chad has passed a law that henceforth, people who reject marriage proposals must pay a fine known as ‘amchilini’.
In effect, women who reject marriage proposals from men will pay a fine between $23 and $39.
Men who fail to accept marriage proposals from women will also pay a fine of $15, Kasatintin.com gathered.
The Islamic Council argued that its decision was inspired by the Quran.
Many rights activists have opposed the order as it violates a national law guaranteeing freedom of consent to marriage.
The Chadian Women’s Rights League for instance has launched the hashtag #StopAmchilini to denounce the decision.
