Ghana has held a grand national event in Adaklu in the Volta Region today,Monday, March 6, 2023 to mark the country’s 66th independence day anniversary.
It was a beautiful occasion. President Nana Akufo-Addo acknowledged the fact that Ghana was facing serious economic hardship but urged Ghanaians to trust him to fix the challenge.
Ahead of the anniversary celebration, former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo advised the government to invest funds earmarked for the Independence Day celebrations on meaningful projects that will benefit Ghanaians.
Ex-president Mahama also questioned the need for celebrating 66 years of Independence when there is shortage of vaccines in the country to cater for the immunisation of newborns.
The Business and Financial Times report support the call on government to cut expenses on Independence Day celebrations and reinvest it in a relatively profitable ventures.
The report hinted that ‘Overall, it costs the country between GhȻ16 million to GhȻ20 million to organise the Independence Day anniversary each year [meanwhile] the average cost of building basic school classroom block is estimated at GhȻ600,000. This translates into an average of 30 classroom blocks for basic schools each year from Independence Day anniversary budget alone’.
