Akufo-Addo To Rename University Of Ghana After His Uncle J.B Danquah

President Nana Akufo-Addo wants the name of the University of Ghana to be changed.

He is proposing that the university should be named after his late uncle Joseph Boakye Danquah, otherwise called J.B Danquah.

Akufo-Addo described his late uncle who was a Ghanaian scholar and politician as the founder of the University of Ghana.

According to him, J.B Danquah’s pioneering work to reject the British report that proposed a single university for the whole of West Africa in Nigeria and to mobilise Ghanaians to have their own university, led to the establishment of the University of Ghana.

He hinted that the renaming of the University of Ghana in honour of J.B Danquah may well happen one day.

He said ‘Indeed, in many other jurisdictions where there is less heat in their politics and more attachment to the fact of historical record, it would not have been out of place to have this university named after him. Who knows, one day it may well happen’.

The president made similar remarks some five years ago when the university launched an endowment fund as part of its 70th anniversary celebration. SOURCE: Kasatintin.com  Author’s note: Article written with additional materials from Myjoyonline.com
