Former Black Stars striker Raphael Dwamena has died after he collapsed on the pitch during Egnatia Rrogozhinë’s game against Partizani Tirana in Albania.
The 28-year-old Ghanaian striker suffered a heart seizure and fainted on the pitch in the 23rd minute of the game on Saturday, November 11, 2023.
The team doctors rushed to the field to help him but their effort was unsuccessful and he died on the pitch.
Kasatintin.com has learnt that Raphael Dwamena had heart complications yet kept playing soccer with the support of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) contrary to the recommendation of his counsel in October 2019 to retire from active football.
He first suffered cardiac arrest in 2020 and then collapsed on the pitch in November 2021 when he played for BW Linz in their OFB Cup game against TSV Hartberg.
Dwamena was later released by the club in 2022 due to his heart problem. He then moved to Albanian side KF Egnatia in January.
The striker has played for 9 clubs including Red Bull Salzburg, Levante, Real Zaragoza, and FC Zurich during his 9 years professional career. SOURCE: Kasatintin.com
