78-year-old politician has defeated President George Weah, 57 in Tuesday’s presidential elections.
Official results from 99.58% of ballots counted indicate that Boakai is in the lead, with 50.89% to Weah’s 49.11% in the tight presidential run-off.
Weah, a former football star has been in power since 2018. He will step down in January 2024.
President-elect Joseph Boakai is an experienced politician who previously served as the 29th vice president of Liberia from 2006 to 2018, under President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
Political analysts say George Weah lost the elections over his failure to tackle corruption amidst rising prices and continued economic hardships in his country.
President Weah conceded defeat late Friday saying ‘The Liberian people have spoken, and we have heard their voice…I urge you to follow my example and accept the result of the elections…our time will come again’ in 2029. SOURCE: Kasatintin.com
