Some unidentified gunmen have attempted to overthrow the government in Sierra Leone at about 3am on Sunday, November 26,2023, international news agencies report.
The assailants made an attempt to break into a military armoury, precisely the Wilberforce Baracks.
The armed men also broke into prisons, setting the inmates free.
Detainees from a number of ‘major’ facilities were released on Sunday morning, Sierra Leone’s Information and Civic Education Ministry revealed in a statement.
Gunfire were heard in some neighbourhoods in the capital, Freetown, on Sunday afternoon.
The government has imposed a nationwide curfew until further notice following the attempted coup d’etat or security incident.
Residents across the country have been strongly advised to stay indoors while flights to and from Sierra Leone’s only international airport have also been cancelled. SOURCE: Kasatintin.com
