A man, suspected to have cut down a 300-year-old sacred tree at Feyiase in the Ashanti Region, has been granted GHS20,000 bail with one surety by the Atasemanso Circuit, after spending close to a month in custody.
The suspect, Solomon Amponsah managed to meet the bail condition on Wednesday, December 6, 2023.
The Feyiase traditional authority prophesied ‘doom’ for the perpetrator(s) who secretly fell the historical Okomfo Anokye cola tree in the middle of the night a month ago.
They further performed purification rites at the site, leading to the arrest of some suspects.
According to history, the Feyiase cola tree (or Okomfo Anokye Bese) sprung up after revered chief priest, Okomfo Anokye spat on the ground while chewing cola nuts as he traveled through the Feyiase community.
The sacred cola tree is 300 years old, and it is said to contain magical powers which has been used to cure bareness, heal people of all kinds of ailments and reverse all forms of spiritual curses over centuries.
The Feyiase community itself holds some of Asante’s historic events, including their battle with the Denkyiras in the 17th century. SOURCE: Kasatintin.com
