Namibia’s President Hage Geingob has died in the early hours of Sunday morning while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek.
Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba confirmed the death of Mr Geingob, 82 and said ‘At his side was his dear wife Madame Monica Geingos and his children’.
The deceased Namibian leader had been diagnosed with cancer last month and was due to be flown to the US for treatment.
Geingob became president in 2015 and was serving his second but final term in office. He has been unfit for many years.
Just last year, he underwent an aortic operation, and in 2014 he revealed that he had survived prostate cancer.
Namibia will hold presidential and parliamentary elections in November. The governing Swapo party, which the late president belongs to, has been in power since independence in 1990.
The Swapo party has filed current deputy prime minister of the country, Mrs Nandi-Ndaitwah as its presidential candidate.
Nandi-Ndaitwah will become the country’s first female president should she win the upcoming elections. SOURCE: Kasatintin.com
