The University of Professional Studies (UPSA), Accra will soon be renamed.
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) revealed that UPSA will be named after its founder and first Director, Nana J.K Opoku-Ampomah.
In a recent video shared online by GHOne TV, Dr Opoku Prempeh maintained that UPSA will have a new name should the NPP retain power.
It appears the change of name of the institution’s has been on the table for years. In April 2018, President Nana Akufo-Addo disclosed that the Council of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) had taken the decision to rename the institution…that the decision had received Presidential Consent, and that when Parliament approved the resolution, the University would be known and called the Opoku-Ampomah University of Professional Studies.
In October 2023, President Akufo-Addo ignited a huge debate after making a proposal for the University of Ghana,Legon to be named after his late uncle, J.B Danquah.
Since 2018,a list of notable public universities have been renamed under the administration of Akufo-Addo.
