Search and rescue operation at Akyem Batabi where a 3-storey church building collapsed and trapped worshippers has come to an end.
Close to 60 people were said to be praying at the Church of Prosperity auditorium in the Eastern Region of Ghana when the building collapsed on them on October 20.
The victims had gathered to fast and pray for Prophet Akoa Isaac, the founder and leader of the church who was seriously sick. He was later arrested by the police to assist them with investigations.
An eyewitness earlier told Kasatintin.com that a huge snake ran out of the ground floor of the place of worship just before it came down.
Rescue workers, after combing through the rubble day and night, found a total of 22 dead bodies when they officially closed the search operation on Friday.
Among the dead are 11 women, a baby and 10 men. 8 injured victims have also been taken to the hospital.
Officials have given up hope of retrieving more bodies.
‘This is sad news and we cannot do anything about it. We will only give it to the almighty God’, head of the disaster management team said.
The editorial team of Kasatintin.com wish to express our condolences to the families who lost relatives in this tragic incident.
