Sierra Leone’s veteran striker Kei Kamara is in trouble after he missed a late penalty to seal the team’s chances of reaching the next round of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) ongoing in Cameroon.
Angry fans attempted to set fire into Kamara’s house in Freetown after he missed a penalty in a game against Equatorial Guinea.
Sierra Leone lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea on Thursday.
Pablo Ganet’s 38th-minute strike ensured Equatorial Guinea finished second in Group E and progressed to the next stage of the tournament.
Yet Sierra Leone could have gone through easily– at least as one of the best third-placed finishers– if they had managed a draw in the game.
The team was awarded a last-minute penalty, but Kamara missed the opportunity as his kick was saved by Equatorial Guinea’s 20-year-old goalkeeper Jesus Owono.
The supporters back home could not handle the painful 1-0 defeat and decided to take the law into their own hands by burning Kei Kamara’s house.
The striker’s house is currently under police protection.
