Some students of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in the Ashanti Region have reportedly set a five-room dormitory block on fire.
Over 500 continuing students of the mission school have been displaced as a result of the inferno.
The incident occured on Friday, October 8 at about 8pm while the school was having church service.
Latest information gathered by Kasatintin.com suggests that the school examination council set out strict procedures to stop the final year students from cheating in the 2021 West Africa Examination Council Certificate Exams (WASSCE).
Following the decision, the Free SHS final year student were not able to copy at the exams hall.
After writing their last WASSCE paper on Friday, the angry students registered their displeasure at the ‘unsympathetic’ authorities by burning down the boys’ dormitory.
Firefighters responded on time which prevented the fire from spreading to other properties of the mission school.
An officer of the Ghana National Service said they picked intelligence a few days ago that some students were planning to set fire into the building.
‘I was hit with a chair at the time we were all busily working to kill the fire. I saw the boys who attacked me and still don’t understand why the four young men opted to throw objects at me instead of helping to put the fire off’,the fire officer said in a media interview.
Meanwhile, investigations are underway to track down the arsonists.
The Akufo-Addo-led government spent over GH¢68 million in procuring past questions for both 2020 and 2021 WASSCE candidates.
Government has justified the need for the past questions but it appears most students still want to be spoon-fed with answers in the exams hall.
