Philip Mensah, the young man who is suspected to have crashed his motorcycle into the mining truck which caused an explosion in Bogoso in Western part of Ghana on Thursday, January 20, 2022 has revealed all he knows about the accident.
The explosion killed many and destroyed almost the entire Apiate community situated between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality in the Western Region.
Earlier reports claimed the tragic explosion happened when a motorcycle collided with a vehicle carrying mining explosives.
Eyewitnesses said that the motorbike rider attempted to overtake the mining truck and incidentally got trapped under it.
The truck driver who is said to have been moving from Tarkwa towards the Chirano mines unknowingly pulled the bike along and the sparks generated caused the explosion.
But Philip Mensah says media reports on the tragic incident is inaccurate.
Telling his side of the story, Philip said that he never encountered the said mining vehicle that exploded, neither was he at the scene during the explosion.
According to him, he was hit from behind by a certain vehicle while riding from Nhyireso to Bogoso.
‘A car hit me from behind. All I heard was a bang. So I fell off and slid on the coal tar for a while. In the process, I saw my motorbike sliding on the road as well. I did not see the car that hit me because it was from behind’, the rider told JoyNews in an interview closely monitored by Kasatintin News.
Philip said he was receiving treatment at the hospital when he was informed that a truck had exploded.
He insisted ‘I don’t know where that story is coming from because I was not at the scene. I did not see any truck around me when the accident occurred. I was in the tricycle with one woman and the two of us were carried to the health facility’.
Philip Mensah told the Ghana News Agency that ‘The people who conveyed us to the hospital later informed me that it was a sprinter bus that hit my tricycle and that the driver ran away after the accident’.
Police CID took him to the scene of the accident on Sunday January 23, as part of investigations.
Philip Mensah who was filled with sadness whiles at the disaster site said ‘I feel bad. We are all human, so I am sad. My concern is that people are saying different things. Some said I collided with the explosive-laden car, others said I got burnt etcetera’.
He had his elbow and knee bandaged with bruises on his hand and chin.
Meanwhile, police investigators have also interrogated the driver of the mining truck.
The interrogation of the two persons may help the investigators to unravel the circumstances that led to the accident and the subsequent explosion.
