News Just In: An aircraft carrying Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Chilima and nine others has gone missing few minutes after takeoff.
The Malawi Defense Force aircraft ‘went off the radar’ after leaving the capital, Lilongwe on Monday, a statement from the president’s office said.
The aircraft was scheduled to land at Mzuzu International Airport in the country’s north at 10:00 local time (09:00 BST).
The other passengers who were onboard the missing flight include Chilima’s wife Mary, former First Lady, Shanil Dzimbiri and some officials from the Vice President’s United Transformation Movement (UTM) party.
The Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera has since cancelled his flight to the Bahamas. He was expected to leave the country Monday evening.
