Bangladesh Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina has resigned today, Monday, August 5 and left the country.
Hasina, who is the daughter of the country’s founding father fled to India using the military helicopter.
The army chief has addressed the nation, announcing an interim government will be formed.
There is wild jubilation on the streets following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. Some of the jubilant demonstrators have occupied the official residence of the former Bangladeshi PM.
Since July,2024 young people including University students have staged massive protests against the Hasina’s government. Over 106 protesters have died while close to 11,000 people have been arrested. Some 20,000 opposition members are behind bars, reports claimed.
The unrest was sparked by a controversial quota system. This system reserved 30 percent of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s War of Independence in 1971.
The government initially ordered a complete internet shutdown when protesters called on the general public to join a ‘Long March to Dhaka’. Following intense pressure, a government agency later gave a verbal order to restore broadband internet around 1:15 on Monday. SOURCE: Kasatintin.com
