Ghana’s outgoing Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has been decorated by President Akufo-Addo with Ghana’s highest honour, the ‘Order of the Star of Ghana – Officer Award, at the 2024 National Honours event held in Accra on Monday, December 30, 2024, at the Accra International Conference Centre.
Dr Bawumia’s running mate in the 2024 elections, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh was also among those honoured at the ceremony, receiving an award for public service in the Order of the Volta – Officer Awardee.
Giving more information about the design of the grand medals, national newspaper, GraphicOnline wrote on X:’Up-close with the Grand Medal handed out today at the National Awards and Honours 2024.The silver medal which has an elephant on the front and the Coat of Arms of Ghana on the reverse may be awarded to all ranks of the Ghana Armed Forces as well as members of the Public Service for faithful and loyal service to the Republic #GraphicOnline’.
Late President Dr Kwame Nkrumah in 1960 instituted the ‘Order of the Volta’, one of Ghana’s highest honours. Over his 6 years administration, Nkrumah awarded it only once – to Valentina Tereshkova, first woman to be in space.
