The interrogation of Bernard Antwi Boasiako alias ‘Chairman Wontumi’ at the Police CID Headquarters in Accra was interrupted after Wontumi suddenly fell sick while being questioned by Police investigators on Tuesday.
Wontumi, who is the Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, has been accused of involving himself in illegal mining activities leading to the destruction of natural resources.
He has also being hit with a writ of summons from Exim Bank but his legal counsel said ‘We are going to respond to the pleadings tomorrow [Wednesday, May 28,2025].We are very hopeful that we’ll be able to mount a defence’.
Lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi told the press that Chairman Wontumi fell ill during the interrogation process and was subsequently transferred to a hospital for medical attention.
He said ‘My client has been taken to the hospital for medical treatment…We haven’t finished with the interrogation, so we will come back to continue — hopefully tomorrow, if his condition improves. Otherwise, he will remain there until doctors discharge him’.
Chairman Wontumi’s unfortunate ill-health at the apex of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO)’s investigation has become a hot topic on social media.
For no particular reason, a photo of Chairman Wontumi, stuck in hospital bed to validate his inability to meet the Kumasi Traditional Council at Manhyia Palace immediately to answer questions on his alleged comments about the Asantehene in January 2024, has resurfaced online.
We wish Chairman Wontumi a speedy recovery.
