Soldiers in Niger have declared a coup on national television.
They successfully removed President Mohamed Bazoum from power in the early hours of Wednesday,July 26, 2023 and clearly stated that the constitution has been dissolved, all institutions suspended, and the country’s borders closed.
Mohamed Bazoum,64, who was elected as Niger’s president two years ago has been detained by troops.
The army has given its backing to the troops who took President Mohamed Bazoum captive.
Some citizens have shown greater support for the coup leaders and have attacked the headquarters of the ousted president’s party, setting it on fire and stoning and burning cars outside.
