South Korea’s parliament has passed a bill on Tuesday to ban the eating and sale of dog meat.
The National Assembly passed the bill by a 208-0 vote to end the centuries-old practice of eating dog meat in the country.
South Korea has instituted the legislation as a way to realize ‘the values of animal rights, which pursue respect for life and a harmonious co-existence between humans and animals’.
In respect of this, breeding, sale and slaughtering of dogs for their meat is prohibited forthwith.
Offenders face a fine of up to 30 million won (£18,000) or three years imprisonment, but the new law will be operational after a three-year grace period.
Some angry dog farmers intend to file a constitutional appeal and embark on a nationwide protest.
