President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday evening reimposed the ban on public gatherings as part of measures to check the rise in COVID-19 cases in Ghana.
In his address to the nation, President Akufo-Addo stated that all parties, weddings and concerts are effectively banned until further notice.
He said that anyone found breaking the new directive will be made to face the law fully.
In his last address on measures taken so far to fight COVID-19 in the country, Akufo-Addo hinted that he will be forced to introduce a stiffer directive if the number of COVID-19 cases continued to increase.
The rate of increase in active COVID-19 cases according to records has skyrocketed showing no sign of decline anytime soon since the last time he spoke to the nation.
President Akufo-Addo said in a televised address on Sunday January 31,2021 that:
‘Until further notice, funerals, weddings, concerts, theatrical performance and parties are banned. Private burials with not more than 25 people can take place with the enforcement of the social distancing, hygiene and mask-wearing protocols.
Beaches, nightclubs, cinemas and pubs continue to be shut. Our borders by land and sea remain closed.
All workplaces, public and private must implore a shift system for workers in addition to the use of virtual platforms for business or work.’
The President also directed that ‘Restaurants should provide take-away services, and should, as much as possible, avoid seated services.
The National Sports Authority and the Ghana Football Association should ensure compliance with the twenty-five per cent capacity rule in our stadia, with spectators respecting the social distancing rule and wearing of masks’.
He advised leaders of the various religious organisations (including churches and mosques) to enforce ‘the protocols relating to attendance, i.e. the two-hour duration, one-metre social distancing, mask-wearing, use of sanitisers, and the presence of veronica buckets, liquid soap, and rolls of tissue paper’.
