Daddy Lumba is a multiple award-winning musician who has over thirty albums to his credit. He has won several Ghana Music Awards and other excellence awards.
He can be perfectly described as a contemporary highlife artiste. The Ghanaian entertainer has consistently released songs which reflect the changes in taste of music.
Daddy Lumba is serious about his career; he has his own recording studio where he does all his works.
Family Background
The parents of Daddy Lumba were teachers. His father, Owoahene Kwadwo Fosu died when Daddy Lumba was only a child.
His mother, Comfort Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Saah raised him as a single parent. She died in 2001 in Kumasi. Her death was a big blow to Lumba as she was literally everything to him.
Most of his hit songs, including ‘Anidasoɔ Wɔhɔ Ma Obiara’, ‘Ohia Asɛm’, Ɛmmere Pa Bɛba’, ‘Agya Bi Wua Agya Bi Tease’ were actually dedicated to Ama Saah.
Lumba is married and said to blessed with ten children.
His Music Career
Daddy Lumba’s music career started at age 16. He was the leader of Juaben Senior High School Choir from 1983 to 1984. Before completing Juaben SHS in 1985, Lumba formed the Lumba Brothers group with a few close friends and girlfriend, Theresa Abebrese.
After school, Theresa assisted Lumba to travel to Germany to seek greener pastures.
While in Germany, he met Ernest Nana Acheampong, who introduced him to a group he had already formed with a white man called Talking Dreams.
Lumba was still a gospel singer at this time. It was Nana Acheampong who introduced him to highlife music. The duo formed a different group, Lumba Brothers and released a lot of popular songs until they went their separate ways some years later.
Interestingly, the Lumba Brothers intended to release an album in 1986 but it was delayed for three years due to financial constraints.
The album was finally released in 1989 after Lumba’s wife, Akosua Serwaa produced the album dubbed ‘Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu’.
