President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced the commencement of religious activities from June 5.
The president imposed a ban on social gathering some months ago to check the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Religious activities including church service and Muslim prayers in the mosque could not be held as a result of the presidential order.
But during his 10th address to the nation on Sunday evening, President Akufo-Addo said the ban has been lifted.
This, he indicated is the beginning of stage one of the process of easing restrictions.
According to President Akufo-Addo:
‘An abridged format for religious services can commence. Twenty-five per cent attendance, with a maximum number of 100 congregants, can worship at a time in church or at the mosque, with a mandatory one metre rule of social distancing between congregants’.
Prior to this announcement, the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) said churches were ready to organise as many as 10 services a day as part of measures to control the spread of the virus.
However, a section of the general public have doubts that majority of churches will comply with the laid down protocols to ensure the safety of their members.
There are also fears that some greedy pastors will take advantage of the pandemic to extort money from their unsuspecting congregants.
