A Kenyan televangelist who claimed that infertile or menopausal women could become pregnant in four months, without having sexual relations, but through his prayers has died in a horrific car crash.
Gilbert Deya, who called himself a bishop, was killed in a multi-vehicle accident on a highway in western Kenya on Tuesday. He died on the spot.
Deya’s ministry, Gilbert Deya Ministries, had churches in London and Manchester, and he claimed to have the power to make infertile women pregnant through prayer.
Deya’s ‘miracle babies’ claims attracted the wrong kind of attention, where he was accused of stealing babies from poor people in Kenya and selling them to childless couples.
In fact, Kenyan authorities charged him with stealing five children between 1999 and 2004. Deya denied the charges after being extradited to Kenya in 2017 to face trial.
The preacher’s death has shocked many, but others have expressed relief that his alleged baby-trafficking operation may finally be brought to an end.
Gilbert Deya is still seen as a saviour. Many infertile couples testify that they have benefited from his ‘miracle babies’.
The self-styled man of God was born in 1937 in Juja, Kiambu, Kenya. He is eleventh in a family of fifteen children.
Deya dropped out of school due to hardships encountered as a young boy. He married his wife Mary in 1958 and together they had 15 children.
