Cardiologist, Dr Abdul Sahmed Tanko has revealed that excessive consumption of salted tilapia popularly known as ‘koobi’ can cause heart-related diseases.
Dr Sahmed Tanko also advised the public against the intake of ‘momone’, a foul-smelling fish as it is not safe for one’s health.
He observed that ‘koobi’ and ‘momone’ contain too much salt and should be taken in moderation to avoid the risk of diseases.
‘We put so much salt in our foods which is not good for our health. Excessive intake of ‘koobi’ and ‘momone’ can also cause heart-related diseases and I advise against it. We have to eat them in moderation,’ Dr Sahmed Tanko stated at the launch of World Hearts Day in Accra.
Cooking with ‘koobi’ and ‘momone’ are traditions that have been handed down from one generation to the other.
This is not the first time some experts have attempted to discredit Ghanaian foods.
In 2017, Founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Mensa Otabil described fufu as a menace which is killing Africans.
Speaking at the National Convocation of the 2017 Springboard Roadshow, Pastor Otabil described the process of preparing fufu as tedious and unhygienic.
The respected man of God was diispleased with the situation in which the sweat of the one pounding the fufu eventually ends up mixing with the food being prepared.
That’s not all. A recent study has shown that eating of fufu causes throat cancer. Watch the video below for the details.
