First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo has taken a decision to reject the offer for her to be paid allowances.
Ghanaians have for some days now questioned the basis upon which President Nana Akufo-Addo’s wife and Samira Bawumia were to receive salaries in their capacity as First Lady and Second Lady respectively.
Per the recommendation of the Presidential Committee on Emoluments for Article 71 officeholders, the spouses of former presidents of the Republic of Ghana will also draw salaries backdated to 2017.
But in a statement issued on July 12, 2021, Rebecca Akufo-Addo said she has ‘decided to refund all monies paid to her as allowances from the date of the President’s assumption of office, i.e., from January 2017 to date, amounting to GH¢899,097.84.’
The statement stressed that the wife of the president took the decision because the public have expressed negative opinions on the need for the state to pay her regular salary.
Mrs Akufo-Addo opined that such commentaries only seek ‘to portray her as a venal, self-seeking and self-centered woman, who does not care about the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian’.
