Former President John Dramani Mahama has forced Ghanaians to pick their dictionary to look up for the meaning of the phrase ‘do or die’.
The phrase has been subjected to many interpretations.
Mahama, during his ‘Thank You’ tour in the Bono Region on Tuesday, September 7 reiterated his position that, the 2020 presidential elections was rigged in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He said his party, the National Democratic Congress (NPP) has learnt a big lesson from the electoral defeat and going forward the party will be extra vigilant at the polling station.
‘We were clearly robbed, but we accepted the verdict for the sake of peace.
‘But I want to state here that the next elections would be won or lost at the polling station. So at the polling station, it will be do or die. I am not saying all die be die. I’m saying it will be ‘do or die’ because the right thing must be done’, Mahama told Techiman-based Akina FM in an interview monitored by Kasatintin.com.
His particular use of the phrase ‘do or die’ at the polling station has been misconstrued as a prediction of violence in the 2024 general elections.
He has been fighting off claims by a section of the public and the NPP that his recent comment is on the small level as President Nana Akufo-Addo’s ‘all die be die’ statement made in 2012.
John Dramani Mahama insists that the phrase is an idiomatic expression which means ‘a critical assignment that you have, and you must do the needful or perish’.
Speaking on Sunyani-based Moonlite FM, he said:
‘What I’m saying is, NDC must not wait to go to the Supreme Court. We have to be vigilant at the polling station and collation centres. And so I won’t retract. The next election for NDC is going to be a do or die affair’
