Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju tragically died in the ring during a match in Ghana over the weekend.
Viral videos showed the moment Olanrewaju, 40, collapsed in the ring during a fight against Ghanaian boxer Jonathan Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
He was pronounced dead at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was rushed for treatment.
The Ghana Boxing Authority has confirmed the incident. Officials will likely launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Olanrewaju’s death.
The General Secretary of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, Remi Aboderin has also expressed shock and devastation, vowing to support the boxer’s family.
Olanrewaju had an impressive boxing career, with 13 wins, 12 of which were by knockout, in 23 professional fights.
However, his performance had decline recently, suffering four consecutive losses before his tragic death.
