Yaw Osafo-Marfo, Senior Minister in President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first term, has reportedly resigned from his position.
According to Asaaseradio.com, ‘Osafo-Marfo communicated his decision to President Akufo-Addo after the 9 December results declaration’.
It is not clear at this moment what prompted the experienced politician to resign from government.
But information suggests he has resigned from active politics due to old age.
Born in 1942, Osafo-Marfo was the Member of Parliament for Akim Oda Constituency from 1997 to 2009.
He previously served as Finance Minister in former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration between 2001 and 2009.
Osafo-Marfo assisted with the preparation of the National Public Sector Reform Strategy (NPSRS) for 2018-2023 whiles in office as a Senior Minister.
His office was also deeply involved in the implementation of the government’s Ghana Beyond Aid agenda.
However, many have questioned the relevance of the role of a Senior Minister in government.
The Senior Minister’s role was first introduced into the Ghanaian body politic by former President Kufuor in 2001. He appointed J. H. Mensah as his Senior Minister.
Akufo-Addo also continued with this tradition and appointed Osafo-Marfo, as his Senior Minister when he assumed office in January 2017.
