President John Mahama’s choice of outfit to the graduation ceremony of the Ghana Military Academy in Accra has caused a buzz nationally.
Mahama, in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), donned a full naval uniform—white ceremonial attire of the Ghana Navy—in honour of the occasion held on Friday,April 12,2025 at the Teshie Military Academy and Training School.
People are talking about the President’s choice of apparel at the passing-out parade of cadets who have completed their military training.
However, President Mahama has won the ceremonial uniform of the military on many occasions related to activities of GAF.
In 2016, when the President wore army uniform during the Ghana Military Academy Graduation Parade, Constitutional lawyer, Prof. Stephen Kweku Asare said it was wrong for Mahama to dress up in the military outfit.
In a social media post attributed to the lawyer, he argued that ‘The GAF frown upon civilians wearing military uniforms or operating military accouterments. The President is a civilian and should desist from wearing military uniform or wielding military weapons.
He said ‘When the President wears military uniforms (operates military equipment or choose to stay at the Barracks), he blurs the constitutional distinction between the GAF and its civilian command. It also bastardizes the military laws against civilians wearing military uniforms.
The President should set an example for civilians by refraining from wearing military uniforms. His deeds, including his wardrobe, should also remind the GAF that they are under civilian command.
The uniform was meant for persons in uniform. Let us keep it that way!’.
