Call it the most controversial royal wedding!
Japan’s Princess Mako will marry her former classmate, a commoner in a few days.
The couple first met in 2012 as students at the International Christian University in Tokyo.
Princess Mako and Kei Komuro’s wedding is scheduled for Tuesday, October 26, 2021.
Princess Mako will lose her royal status as a result of her decision to settle down with a commoner, Mr Komuro, an aspiring lawyer.
Kasatintin.com gathers that she will forgo a traditional lump-sum payment of up to 150 million yen ($1.3million) which is often given to a member of the royal family upon their departure from the household.
But Princess Mako is prepared to leave her Tokyo palace to start a new life with her husband in New York after the marriage.

Expections of the Royal Wedding
Under Japanese law, female imperial family members forfeit their status upon marriage to a ‘commoner’. The rule does not apply to male heirs.
Princess Mako will be denied the usual rites associated with a royal family wedding.
She is the first female member of the royal family to go wayward and losing royal entitlements.
This royal wedding will have no funfair. They will keep it simple by signing their marriage certificate in a registry office followed by a news conference, then Princess Mako’s departure from the royal family and a move to the United States.
Some critics say Komuro, 30 is an unsuitable groom for the royal bride.

They argue that he is son of a single parent, from a poor home and doesn’t dress well.
The couple were initially set to wed in 2018, but it was allegedly called off as Mr Komuro’s family had run into financial difficulties.
Reports said Mr Komuro’s mother had financial problems–having taken a loan from her ex-fiancé and not paid him back.
The palace denied the delay of the wedding was link to this story, though Mako’s father Crown Prince Fumihito indicated that it was important for the money matters to be dealt with before the couple were allowed to marry.
Last month, the groom arrived in Japan for their October 26 wedding wearing long hair tied in a ponytail.
His hairstyle caused a stir. Most Japanese considered the ponytail as a sign Komuro wasn’t conforming to social expectations.
‘If he were a singer or artist, it would be fine, but people think he is not ‘lawyer-like’ nor looking appropriate for a person who will wed a royal woman’, Hitomi Tonomura, a women’s and gender studies professor at the University of Michigan fired.

Princess Mako Falls Sick
The movements of Princess Mako and Komuro has received heavy media coverage.
The Imperial Household Agency disclosed that the excessive media coverage around the couple and their family has caused the princess to suffer post-traumatic stress disorder.
Her aunt, Empress Masako, also experienced a stress-related illness, following intense pressure on her to produce a male heir.
