Wife of Ghana’s Vice President, Samira Bawumia has declared her intention to refund all allowances paid to her by the state since the inception of the Akufo-Addo-led administration.
Samira Bawumia will pay back a total of GH¢887,482 to the state following this decision.
A statement from the Second Lady’s Office dated July 13, 2021 and sighted by Kasatintin.com indicated that Mrs Bawumia will ‘not accept any monies allocated to her pursuant to the recommendations of the Prof Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu led committee, as approved by Parliament’.
She arrived at the decision in consultation with the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the statement added.
Samira Bawumia is expected to refund all allowances paid her since 2017.
First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo earlier made it public that she will also return every money government has given her till date.
According to her, she has ‘decided to refund all monies paid to her as allowances from the date of the President’s assumption of office, i.e., from January 2017 to date, amounting to GH¢899,097.84.’
Rebbeca Akufo-Addo stressed that she was doing so because the public have expressed negative opinions on the need for the state to pay her regular salary.
To her such commentaries only seek ‘to portray her as a venal, self-seeking and self-centered woman, who does not care about the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian’.
