A viral video showing female students being touched to see if they were wearing bras before taking part in an exam in Olabisi Onabanjo University in south-western Ogun State has sparked outrage across the country and on social media networks.
In the controversial footage, female staff of the university were seen pressing the chest of some students as they queued to enter an examination hall.
An insider revealed that authorities always checked their clothes and have also enforced a strict moral code despite not being a religious institution.
Some have questioned the basis for the inspection but a student leader has defended the bra policy, arguing that it has been part of the institution’s dress code and it has helped maintained aimed a ‘distraction-free environment’.
However, Haruna Ayagi, a senior official at Human Rights Network has indicated that students have every right to sue the university for violating their rights.
Haruna told the BBC that ‘Unwarranted touches on another person’s body is a violation and could lead to legal action. The university is wrong to adopt this method to curb indecent dressing’.
