Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has sued Captain Smart, host of Onua TV Morning Show ‘Maakye’ for defamation.
Mr Ofori-Atta has accused the controversial Ghanaian media personality of making a claim that he (Ken Ofori-Atta) had taken a 10% share of the $3 billion bailout Ghana recently secured from the International Money Fund (IMF).
Smart is purported to have said on TV that, ‘Are you aware that Ken Ofori-Atta has taken his 10% of the IMF money? [For] Every loan we take he takes 10%’.
Lawyers for the Finance Minister indicated that the statement portrays Mr. Ofori-Atta as corrupt.
In a writ, Ken Ofori-Atta demanded a ‘recovery of the sum of Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,000,000.00) as general damages including aggravated and/or exemplary damages for defamation for the libel uttered by Defendant’.
