The Federal Government of Nigeria has scrapped Mathematics as a compulsory subject for admission into Arts and some Humanities programmes in tertiary institutions.
The decision is part of a major reform in university and polytechnic entry requirements directed at promoting fairness, inclusivity, and wider access to tertiary education across the country
The new policy, issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, applies to universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and innovation enterprise academies.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa explained that the move eliminates outdated barriers that have long denied qualified candidates access to higher education.
The Ministry assured that academic standards remain intact.
Under the new guideline, Mathematics remains mandatory only for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), and Social Science courses.
Universities will now require five credit passes in relevant subjects including English Language, while polytechnics will require four.
