The Governing Council of Nigeria’s Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi has sacked Dr Usman Mohammed Aliyu, a Senior Lecturer over an alleged sexual harassment of a post graduate student.
Aliyu was dismissed with immediate effect based on the investigative report of the institution’s Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee which found him guilty of misconduct.
The University Council gave a final approval for his dismissal at their 96th Regular Meeting held on Friday, April 11, 2025.
A dismissal letter from ATBU indicated that Dr Aliyu was found guilty of an ‘indecent relationship’ with a postgraduate female student, Mrs Kamila Rufai Aliyu, who is with the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology.
Rufai had in 2024 petitioned the University Management, making the claim that the lecturer sexually harassed her and had further issued threats towards her academic progression if she did not give in to his demands.
At that time, Dr Aliyu denied the allegation, and went ahead to file a defamation suit against Rufai, her department, and the University in total.
