Kenyan Police have fired tear gas to disperse protesters who tried to occupy a church that recently received a substantial cash donation from President William Ruto.
Some young Kenyans struggling with high cost of living stormed Jesus Winner Ministry in the Roysambu suburb of Nairobi after it received 20 million shillings ($155,000; £120,000 equivalence) gift from Ruto.
The protesters used rocks to block major roads leading to the church and attempted to get into the church and burn down the building. Scores of the demonstrators have been arrested.
President Ruto has defended his donation and has even offered a similar gift to another church in Eldoret, explaining his gesture is an attempt to address the country’s moral decay.
‘Kenya must know God so that we shame the people who are telling us that we cannot associate with the church’, the Nation, a local news website quoted him as saying at another church in Eldoret.
Leaders of the Catholic and Anglican churches rejected such donations from the Presidency last year to protect the church from being used as a political platform.
Kenyans have expressed deep concerns over series of taxes that have been introduced since Ruto assumed office in 2022.
