Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has denied the news suggesting that he has a wife called Ramatu Bawumia.
According to Bawumia, the news circulating that he has another wife aside Samira Bawumia is false.
He asked the public to disregard the fabricated story as the supposed Ramatu is ‘a figment of the imagination of people trying to tarnish the image of the Vice President for their own purposes’.
Ramatu Bawumia, the alleged abandoned first wife of the Veep is reported to be a trader in WaleWale, a town which lies on the main road from Bolgatanga to Tamale in the North East Region of the country.
Until recently, Samira Bawumia, well educated woman was widely acknowledged as the wife of the Ghana’s Vice President.
Ramatu’s name appeared in public for the first time during the second term swearing- in of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Parliament House.
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin while acknowledging the dignitaries present at the ceremony addressed the wife of the Vice President as Ramatu Bawumia.
The Speaker later corrected the error and duly mentioned Samira Bawumia as the wife of Dr Bawumia. He however explained that the name presented to him read Ramatu.
Again, during President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address (SONA 2021) in Parliament, the NDC Minority caucus demanded to see Ramatu Bawumia moment Right Hon Bagbin was about to introduce Samira Bawumia to the House.
In response to the minority bench, the Speaker jovially said:
‘Honorable members, I don’t know which of you has a girlfriend called Ramatu but we don’t have any dignitary here called Ramatu’.
But in his latest press statement, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia stressed that he has ‘never met or seen this purported Ramatu let alone take her as a wife’.
‘For the avoidance of doubt, the Vice-President has only one wife, his dear Samira Bawumia and they have been married for 17 years even though his religion permits him to marry up to four wives’, the statement signed by Bawumia’s Spokesperson added.
The NPP is faced with a heavy decision on who to select as their next presidential candidate when Akufo-Addo ends his second term in office in 2024.
The race is between President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Alan Kyeremanten, Trade and Industry Minister.
Pollster Ben Ephson has advised the NPP to choose Bawumia as the Presidential candidate and Alan Kyeremanten as running mate.
But the hullabaloo concerning Ramatu, or the so called ‘propaganda and deliberate falsehood’ could potentially end Bawumia’s presidential ambitions.
