Former Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson has explained why she used pepper spray at Ablekuma North Constituency where elections were ran again in 19 polling stations following disputes from the December 2024 polls.
Some unidentified men caused commotion at St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station, and reportedly overpowered police.
Viral videos showed Koomson sprinkling pepper spray as a group advanced toward her. One of them kicked her on the ground while the others threw punches at her.
Hawa Koomson nicknamed ‘Kasoa Vandame’ alleged that she used the pepper spray as an act of self-defence against alleged attackers affiliated to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to her, she turned up in Ablekuma North to support NPP candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, insisting ‘I am not a troublemaker, but I don’t take foolishness’.
She refuted accusations of planning in advance to cause violence at Ablekuma North. ‘I did not go there to cause trouble’, she told UTV on Tuesday, maintaining she was targeted.
The former Fisheries Minister said she recognised her attackers were from Kasoa who had ties with the ruling NDC.
‘One of them shouted, ‘Where is Hawa Koomson?’ and they just pounced on me… When I saw the thugs walking toward me holding knives, I acted in self-defence’.
‘I know I’m a threat to the NDC, which is why I take steps to protect myself’, she added while referencing the stabbing of her son during the 2024 voter registration exercise as proof of being a target.
The NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn won the elections .
